The only way to guarantee that your computer is clean of malware is to backup your data and reformat/reinstall Windows XP. As I stated when I began helping you, ZeroAccess is an advanced rootkit, and therefore I can help you try and remove it, but I cannot guarantee that your computer will be 100% secure afterwards. It is up to you if you would like to continue following my previous instructions (posted again below, since they're posted on the previous page of this topic.) If Malwarebytes and ESET do not find any additional malware, then I conclude that I'm not certain why Combofix continues to say you're infected.

Again, if Combofix was detecting a false alarm, there would be additional people reporting the same problem (that is, nothing apparent in the logs, but Combofix still reporting an infection).

If that is the case, the solution is to stop using Combofix. Scanning with updated definitions from each could possibly detect the more recent ZeroAccess tactics (that actually do not show up on a Combofix log - another reason to scan with multiple anti-malware scanners.) They may detect malware that has not been detected yet, which is particularly true in this case because malware is constantly evolving. Different anti-malware scanners have strengths and weaknesses, which is why I asked in my previous post for the scan logs of Malwarebytes and ESET. Malware tends to take many tactics that make it difficult to find the root cause of the malware-related problem, and thus makes the removal much more challenging. If they are not present, then my system is fine, and no amount of scanning will clear up an issue that only Combofix thinks exists. I cannot answer these questions, as that would divulge too much information on the internal workings of Combofix, potentially causing malware authors to circumvent one of the best malware removal tools available. If they are present, then why doesn't Combofix "Fix" the issue? What are the specific signs that causes Combofix to see the ZeroAccess Root?Īre those signs present on my computer, or not? I have reasons behind posting what I've posted (many of which I've explained below.) It may appear as though I'm "shooting around in the dark," though I can assure you I am not doing this.

We have made progress, as I've helped you remove several malware-related items. I'm tired of shooting around in the dark. Also, I don’t know a thing about Editor: I don’t know if it has the OCR button, though I would imagine it does.įingers crossed that the OCR is truly as accurate as it seems to be.We've been at this for more than two weeks, and have made zero progress.

and extracts them onto a mind map for you), then you will want to use PDF XChange Viewer and not Editor. I mention this because if you are a Docear user (Docear is a program that looks at your XChange Viewer highlights, annotations, etc. You can still find the Viewer if you look carefully for it on one of the pages of the website.

It is still free I believe, and it’s an upgrade to PDF XChange Viewer. The developers are replacing PDF XChange Viewer with PDF XChange Editor. Then it took a few minutes to do OCR, and then voila: Still working in the original PDF, I was then able to highlight text and right-click and save. It asked me whether I wanted a medium or high level of accuracy. Well, I’ve only used it once, but the free program PDF XChange Viewer has an OCR button (I accidentally saw it today). Also, many OCR utilities will generate a separate, new PDF or text file that usually does a little distortion of the layout of the original.

A while back someone was asking about how to deal with PDFs that don’t allow you to highlight text for copying, pasting etc.Īs was explained, the problem with such PDFs is that they are photocopy images (pictures) that do not have character recognition (i.e., OCR) of the text in the PDF-picture.Īnd so, a lot of times when you apply OCR apps to such PDFs to try to obtain OCR, these apps’ accuracy at interpreting pictures of text is somewhat good but you usually have to watch out for a significant number of errors.
